The 3rd Niagara Falls Tattoo Expo was held in Niagara Falls, New York, this past August 2nd – 4th, 2013. Hosted by Local Niagara animal activist Katherine Molinaro and tattooer Gavin Royce, {E} was excited to cover this event two years in a row. The event showcased local tattooers and artists alike, bringing Niagara natives and national artists to the Falls.

Amongst the festivities scheduled at the expo was live music, a zombie walk, a sideshow performance team, and a live art fusion each day. Event MC Carl Blasphemy kept us on our toes all weekend, and even attempted to French braid my hair.

{E} got to catch up with Nick D’Angelo who took home Tattoo of the Day on Saturday for a fantastic skull with gold filigree piece. Other tattooers who placed in the tattoo contests include Josh Payne for Tattoo of the Day (Friday) with a killer Joker (Heath Ledger) forearm piece, Jesse Shearman took home 1st place Large Black and Grey for a wicked sidepiece, Shearman also took home 1st place in Best Sleeve for a sleeve of Knight’s armor – stunning piece to see in person.  Matt Macabre took home 3rd place Tattoo of the Day for a Halo shin piece, Brian Manos took home 1st place Traditional for a solid back piece he finished up at the show, Mike Mullaney took home 1st place Chest Piece.

We also had the pleasure of learning about a young girl named Alix Rice, there was a booth there set up, the Alix Rice Peace Park Foundation. On July 8, 2011, Alix was riding her longboard, “Rupert,” home from work when she was struck by a drunk driver. Alix lost her life that night, yet it is her inspiring nature, not tragedy, that will define her legacy. The foundation was formed August 26, 2012 with the major goal of building a skatepark in memory of Alexandria “Alix” Rice. A safe haven for local skateboard/longboard enthusiasts in Alix’s hometown of Amherst. For more info visit www.alixrice.com.

As always, Michele and I had a blast in Niagara. We perused the local sights, walked over to the Canadian side, mingled with the border patrol, rode the Maid of the Mist down to the Falls and made some new friends!
